Cherry Blossom

Scientific Name: Prunus serrulata

Family: Rosaceae

Common Names: Cherry Blossom, Sakura

Cherry blossoms are deciduous trees native to East Asia, particularly Japan, Korea, and China. Known for their beautiful pink to white flowers, they bloom in early to mid-spring, typically lasting only one to two weeks. These trees thrive in temperate climates with well-drained, slightly acidic soil and are commonly found in parks, gardens, and along streets. Cherry blossoms are celebrated for their ornamental value and cultural significance, especially in Japan, where they symbolize the fleeting nature of life and are celebrated during the annual hanami festivals.

Spring is the season of rebirth, and although we won't get to witness cherry blossoms in person this year, I find it beautiful knowing that millions of people on an island thousands of miles away are celebrating the rebirth of this very flower, even if we can't do the same for our relationship. Above is a sketch of Sakura by artist Sakamoto Konen from the Edo period, mid-1800s, Japan. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. - D
